The User interface consists of two main sections:
- Section1: a control panel on the left (blue box in Fig.1) for configuring the input parameters.
- Section2: a map (grey box in Fig.1) where the outputs are shown.
The control panel
Before submitting a simulation, the user is required to set a few parameters in the SIMULATION INPUT section:
GENERAL (blue box in Fig.2)
- Simulation name: Text string to identify the simulation to be carried out;
- Object Class: Class of drifting object from the list below. If the object does not correspond to any of the given categories, choose an object with similar drifting characteristics.
LAST KNOWN POSITION (green box in Fig.2)
The Last Known Position (LKP) is defined as the location where the object or person to be searched for was last seen, or where it was presumed to be located at the time of the accident. The LKP can be specified in two ways:
- by clicking on the map (Fig. 3);
- by typing the Lat/Lon coordinates directly in the corresponding text field (Fig.3)
When typing Lat/Lon coordinates manually, their format can be chosen through the Coordinate format radio button (see red circle in Fig.4). The possible formats for coordinates are:
- DD (Decimal Degree)
- DMS (Degree-Minutes-Seconds)
- DMM (Degree-Minutes-Decimal Seconds)
- Radius: The radius of uncertainty for the LKP. (see red rectangle in the Fig.4)
- Start of drifter release: The date and time at which the person or the object was lost in water.
SIMULATION DURATION (orange box in Fig.2)
The simulation duration determines the time period for which the drifting person or object will be simulated, starting from the time it was lost. Typically, this should be set to the period that the lost person or object has been drifting in the water before rescue operations begin.
FORECASTING SYSTEM (purple box Fig2)
- Oceanographic forecasting system - MFS My Ocean: the current version of the system employs MyOcean hourly forecast data with a spatial resolution of about 6.9 km. The spatial domain is the whole Mediterranean Sea (30°N-45°N, 6°W-36°E).
- Depth of currents: maximum depth of the sea current forecast data used for the drifting computations;
- Atmospheric forecasting system - ECMWF: wind forecasts at 10 m above sea level produced by the ECMWF system with 6-hourly temporal resolution and about 27.8 km spatial resolution.
START THE SIMULATION (red circle in Fig.2)
Once all the parameters are set, the simulation can be submitted by clicking on the SUBMIT button. A progress bar will appear, indicating the elapsed and remaining time.
Submitted jobs can be cancelled before completion by clicking the STOP SIMULATION button
Upon successful completion of the simulation, the output is automatically displayed on the map (Fig.5).
By clicking on individual drifters, it is possible to view their position in a tooltip (see Fig.5). The meaning of the symbols used in the map (circles, lines, polygons, …), is explained in the legend located on the right hand side of the web page.
DISPLAY (yellow box in Fig.2)
- Display environmental fields - Surface Currents This checkbox controls the display of environmental fields on the map.
- Display ruler - nautical miles/kilometers: A checkbox controls the display of a ruler for measuring distances between points on the map (see Fig.6). The distance can be expressed either in nautical miles or kilometers in the text field on the right (see red circle in Fig.6).
COMPUTED SIMULATIONS (yellow box Fig2)
In the Computed Simulation section, a register of previously run simulations is provided. For each simulation the following information is shown:
- Request date: date and time of the job submission;
- Computing time: duration between the job submission and display of the results;
- Effective simulation duration: Duration of simulation selected with the slide bar in the "SIMULATION DURATION" section.
- Status: status of the submitted job (SUCCESS or FAILURE)
A previous simulation can be displayed onthe map by clicking on the "blue eye".
Once the user submits a simulation, a progress bar is displayed both in a dialogue-box at the centre of the map and in the Computed Simulations section (seeFig.8)
A job that has been submitted can be cancelled by clicking on the recycle bin on the right.
